The Kent Spitfires will be Glamorgan’s opponents at Canterbury as the Welsh county look to continue their fine run in white ball cricket as the two teams meet in the Royal London One-Day Cup on Sunday, June 12th with the contest starting at 11am
In 1993 Glamorgan won the Sunday League title by defeating Kent at the St.Lawrence ground in the final game of the summer, with their famous victory, achieved with West Indian legend Viv Richards at the on-striker’s end as Tony Cottey hit the winning runs. This Canterbury tale of joy crowned a season which had also seen Glamorgan perform well in the Nat West Trophy, with Hugh Morris’ men winning sixteen games in the two competitions.
The Glamorgan team of 2016 return to the scene of these famous deeds in 1993 with the side also doing well in the limited overs competitions with Jacques Rudolph’s team sitting on top of the South Group in both the 20 and 50 overs competition, with Friday night’s six-wicket win at Bristol in an action-packed encounter in the NatWest T20 Blast giving the players and support staff plenty to talk about as they made the long journey to south-east England.
Last summer, Glamorgan defeated the Spitfires in an equally dramatic encounter in the Twenty20 competition by one run at Tunbridge Wells, with Michael Hogan and Graham Wagg each playing a starring role with ball and bat respectively.
Their previous visit to the Garden of England for a List A game had however been less successful with Kent being victorious in 2014 when the two sides met at Canterbury for their match in the Royal London One-Cup with Doug Bollinger claiming 5/35 as Glamorgan lost by six wickets.
In fact you have to go back to 2004 – another summer when Glamorgan won the National League – to find the last time the Welsh county defeated Kent in a List A one-day game at Canterbury. On that occasion, Matthew Elliott scored a handsome century to lay the foundations for a Welsh victory by ten runs.
