Glamorgan trail by 49 runs at Cardiff

21 May 2017 | Matches
A defiant 72* by Colin Ingram has taken Glamorgan to 212/5 at the close of the third day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at The SSE SWALEC, with the Welsh county still trailing the visitors by 49 runs after being invited to follow-on.

Evening update

Fletcher and Broad resumed the bowling after tea with Glamorgan on 154/4, still 107 runs in arrears and with Colin Ingram in obdurate mood. His partner David Lloyd duly struck the first boundaries of the session as he twice clipped Fletcher to fine-leg.  Samit Patel then returned in tandem with Brett Hutton to speed things through to the new ball as the fifth wicket pair continued to occupy the crease with diligent application.

The sequence of dot balls ended as Lloyd unfurled a coruscating straight drive against Hutton before Ingram swept Patel for four to complete his fifty from 153 balls, 125 more than last Sunday in the One-Day Cup match at Swansea to show that patience was part of his repertoire alongside power.

With Glamorgan on 184/4 after 80 overs the new ball was taken as Broad and Fletcher returned to the fray, but the Glamorgan batsmen remained resolute for a series of overs until Lloyd edged Fletcher to second slip and departed for a stoic 37. With the total on 194/5, Chris Cooke joined Ingram with 49 balls left in the daily quota.

Ingram responded by biffing Fletcher through extra cover for four as Glamorgan reached 200 after six hours of their innings. Cooke then square-cut Brett Hutton for four before Ingram repeated the stroke in the penultimate.

Afternoon update

Having reached 71/3 at Lunch, Glamorgan were still 190 runs in arrears when play began with Stuart Broad resuming the bowling at the Cathedral Road End, whilst Luke Fletcher returned at the River End. Aneurin Donald struck the first boundary of the session as he drilled Fletcher through the covers, whilst Colin Ingram steered Fletcher through backward point for four.

After looking to advance down the wicket to drive Broad, Donald displayed further chutzpah by  pulling a short ball from Broad high over long-leg for six. Ingram continued his quiet accumulation by flicking Fletcher for a single as Glamorgan reached three figures after 38 overs. Samit Patel then entered the attack and was cover-driven by Donald who also square-cut Harry Gurney for four. But having been subdued by Patel he was then bowled by the left-arm spinner as he advanced down the wicket in an attempt to hoist him over the River Stand.

116/4 saw David Lloyd join the patient Ingram and after quiet reconnaissance he cover drove Patel for four. Ingram continued to accumulate mainly in singles as he chiselled away at the deficit before driving Patel for fours over long-off and to the boards at long-n. Lloyd also found the ropes again as he clipped Brett Hutton to fine-leg

Morning update

Having been dismissed last night for 187, Glamorgan duly followed-on this morning, 261 runs in arrears and they lost an early wicket as in the second over  Nick Selman shouldered arms to Luke Fletcher and was bowled. Will Bragg joined Rudolph with the scoreboard on 3/1 and straight drove both Stuart Broad and Fletcher for four, whilst Jacques Rudolph also clipped Broad to the ropes at mid-wicket before cover-driving the England bowler.

Bragg then greeted the introduction of Harry Gurney into the attack by driving his first delivery to the ropes at wide long-on before he and the steadfast Rudolph accumulated in a series of singles. The southpaw brought up the 50 by under-edging a ball from Gurney to the vacant third man boundary , but two overs later, the seamer gained revenge as he trapped Bragg l.b.w.

54/2 then became 54/3 as Rudolph feathered a catch into Rikki Wessels’ gloves as Brett Hutton gained his first wicket of the innings. Aneurin Donald then off-drove Hutton for three as Ingram picked up where his fellow South African had left off by watchfully playing himself in. He then drove Hutton for four through the covers
