Battery of seam bowlers extend Glamorgan contracts

Seam bowlers Michael Hogan, Timm van der Gugten and Lukas Carey have all signed contract extensions with the club.

Red-ball captain Hogan has signed a one-year extension keeping him at the club until 2019, while van der Gugten and Carey have both signed two-year deals, committing them to the Welsh county until the end of the 2020 season.

Australian bowler Hogan, joined in 2012 from Western Australia and quickly became the mainstay of Glamorgan’s bowling attack. He has since taken 279 wickets for the club in first-class cricket at an average of under 23 and was Glamorgan’s Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014.

He took over the red-ball captaincy mid-way through last season after Jacques Rudolph stepped down and went on to take 50 wickets in the competition, including a career best 10/87 in Glamorgan’s win in the final match of the season against Kent in Canterbury. He also went beyond 500 career first-class wickets in the match.

The 36-year-old also enjoyed a successful 2017 T20 campaign, finishing with 20 wickets including a five wicket-haul against Gloucestershire in Cardiff to finish as Glamorgan’s leading wicket-taker in the competition.

"I'm really pleased to extend my contract with Glamorgan,” said Hogan.

“My family and I have permanently moved to Wales and I feel like an honorary Welshman so it’s great to be able to commit my future for the next couple of years.

“I really enjoyed my cricket last year and the success we had in white-ball cricket, which we now have to transfer into the County Championship.

"I’m looking forward to the challenge of captaining the team and we are determined to build on some encouraging performances in the competition, and hopefully we can kick on again and bring success to the club."

Netherlands international bowler Timm van der Gugten joined Glamorgan in 2016 and made an instant impact, taking 82 wickets across all competitions as he was named Glamorgan Player of the Year.

The 26-year-old Australian-born seamer was affected by injury in 2017, however he still took 22 County Championship wickets at an average under 23 in just five matches.

Glamorgan Academy product, Lukas Carey, first burst onto the scene in 2016 when he took seven wickets on debut against Northamptonshire at Swansea as a nineteen-year old.

Last year, in his first full season with Glamorgan, he took 35 wickets in the County Championship at 30, and was named Glamorgan Young Player of the Year.

Carey, from Croft’s home club of Pontarddulais made his List A and T20 debut in 2017 and memorably took the prize wicket of Jason Roy first ball when Glamorgan narrowly beat Surrey at the Kia Oval in the group stages.

“Glamorgan is my boyhood club and I grew up supporting the team so I’m thrilled to sign a new deal,” said Carey.

“I feel as though my bowling has come on a lot over the last year under the coaches and this is the best place for me to continue to improve and get the best out of my career.

“We have a young but very talented team who showed last year we can challenge for trophies and I can’t wait to get the season started.”

Glamorgan chief executive and director of cricket Hugh Morris, said “It’s great news all three players have committed to the club.

“Michael has been the leader of our attack for a number of years. He is a fantastic competitor and as he showed last year with fifty wickets and a career-best is still a top-quality bowler.

“He also did a fantastic job bringing on our young Welsh players when he was given the captaincy and we are excited to see him continue in the role this season.

“Timm enjoyed a terrific debut season with us and despite injury last year, showed himself to be a real threat with the ball and a wicket-taking bowler.

“He is an integral member of the squad who has put in match-winning contributions for us in both red and white-ball cricket.

“We were thrilled with the progress Lukas made last season after breaking into the first team at the end of 2016. He is a superb bowler with the new ball and was able to back that up with good spells later on in the day.

“It’s very promising to see a young Welsh bowler come through the Academy and we hope many more will follow in his footsteps.”
