Twenty Glamorgan wickets tumbled in the space of 62.1 overs on a dramatic second day of the floodlit Specsavers County Championship match at Hove as Sussex’s battery of high-class seam bowlers dismissed Glamorgan for 85 and 88 to give their side victory by an innings and 154 runs, with Jofra Archer completing match figures of 8/46 in 19.3 overs.

Second session

Nick Selman and Jack Murphy began Glamorgan’s second innings as they followed-on 242 runs in arrears. As in the first session Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer opened the bowling, and this time it was the former who made the initial incision as he bowled Selman with his eighth delivery.  7/1 then became 8/2 as Murphy edged a ball from Archer into Brown’s gloves. Archer then claimed another wicket as Connor Brown departed l.b.w. with the total on 15.

Usman Khawaja responded by pulling the Bajan for four before securing a second boundary as he leg-glanced Chris Jordan who had replaced Robinson at the Cromwell Road End. David Wiese also replaced Archer at the Sea End and was driven square of the wicket by Khawaja. But the South African gained swift revenge as three balls later he had the Australian well caught by Phil Salt running around from mid-wicket to square-leg as the batsman miscued a pull.

36/4 saw Chris Cooke back in the middle and he began by cutting Wiese for four, but in the 21st over he became the fifth man to depart as he edged Jordan to Salt at third slip. Kiran Carlson then guided Wiese for four through the gully before clipping Jordan to square-leg for three. But with the total on 54, Jordan bowled Lawlor.

Robinson and Archer then returned shortly before the second interval with Carlson clipping the latter for four to fine-leg before cover-driving him later in the over. But the young tyro departed next over as he was bowled by Robinson. 70/7 saw van der Gugten join Salter who survived a chance at mid-on as he top-edged a pull against Archer only for a diving Michael Burgess to spill the catch. But it did not prove to be an expensive miss as with the total on 76, Archer removed Salter as Brown completed a regulation catch  behind the stumps.

Van der Gugten then carved Robinson open point for four before departing leg before to the next delivery. Michael Hogan then repeated the stroke against the bowler before Carey top-edged a pull against Archer to the ropes at third man. But Archer ended the contest as with the next ball he bowled Carey as Sussex completed their victory by an innings and 154 runs.

First session

Hove is one of the more genteel and tranquil settings in county cricket, but events this afternoon at Sussex’s headquarters in the floodlit Championship match brought plenty of animation and noise, even from those lounging in the deckchairs at the Cromwell Road End, as Glamorgan began their reply to Sussex’s first innings total of 327.

There was little hint of what was to come as Nick Selman and Jack Murphy opened the innings with  Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer sharing the new ball. After a couple of singles, Selman guided Robinson safely through the slips but Archer re-arranged Murphy’s stumps with his eleventh delivery. 8/1 then became 11/2 as Archer struck again with Selman chopping a ball onto his stumps, whilst two balls later Usman Khawaja edged the Bajan into Ben Brown’s gloves as Glamorgan slipped further to 11/3.

But this was not the end of the drama as two balls later the umpire upheld an l.b.w. appeal against Connor Brown as Glamorgan lurched to 11/4. Kiran Carlson began with a single to fine-leg and two through the gully as he completed his 1,000th run in first-class cricket, but two balls later he also departed as he edged Archer to third slip where Phil Salt took a good diving catch. Chris Cooke then square drove Robinson for four before Jeremy Lawlor opened his account with a nurdle for four through the gully.

Cooke repeated the stroke later in the over before surviving a loud appeal for l.b.w. as Archer continued to extract lavish lateral movement. Chris Jordan then entered the attack for the fifteenth over and with his fourth delivery he found the edge of Lawlor’s bat with Brown completing a regulation catch with the Welsh county slipping further to 34/6. Andrew Salter responded by clipping his first ball for four to the ropes at mid-wicket.

The pair then ran a series of singles as Glamorgan went past their lowest total at the ground - 41 in 1925 – with Cooke celebrating by square-cutting Jordan for four, followed by an on-drive for three against Archer as Glamorgan reached the 50-mark. Salter then off-drove Archer as the England aspirant conceded his first boundary of the session before having a breather having taken 4/15 in his ten-over salvo at the Sea End.

David Wiese joined the attack in tandem with Jordan, but Archer was still in the action as shortly afterwards he dived low at mid-on to hold onto a miscued drive by Salter against Jordan with Glamorgan on 60/7. It then became 66/8 as Jordan yorked van der Gugten before two runs later Wiese produced a beauty which jagged back in low to bowl Cooke for 32. Carey responded by off-driving the South African for four, before using the long handle to pull him for four to mid-wicket followed by a lofted on-drive for six. But next over Carey was run out backing up by Danny Briggs as Glamorgan were dismissed for 85
