6 Sep 2018 | Matches
Despite 67 from Chris Cooke, Glamorgan were dismissed for 132 on the third day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Derbyshire with Tony Palladino completing a ten-wicket match haul whilst on-loan all-rounder Martin Andersson took 4/25 on debut as his adopted county won by 169 runs.

Afternoon Update

The protective sheets and covers were brought out at lunchtime and were in place throughout the afternoon as steady rain fell. Tea was taken at 3.10pm with the precipitation still falling but an hour later, it ceased and mopping up operations began with play resuming at 5.05pm after 44 overs were lost.

Tony Palladino resumed the bowling duties at the Racecourse End with Lockie Ferguson at the City End. Chris Cooke pulled Ferguson, who was bowling around the wicket, for six over the head of the fielder at long-leg before square-cutting Palladino for four. Kieran Bull also defended stoutly besides playing and missing on a couple of occasions. After nearly fifty minutes of stubborn resistance, Ferguson breached Cooke’s defence and re-arranged his stumps, before Michael Hogan nonchalantly cover drove his first ball for three followed by a lofted off-drive for six against Palladino.

But three balls later the contest ended as Hogan skied a drive against Palladino with Ferguson completing the catch at mid-wicket as the seamer completed a ten-wicket haul for the first time in his career,.

Morning Report

Twenty-one wickets tumbled on a bowler-friendly surface yesterday in Derby with the home side, having secured a first innings lead of 130, making 171 in their second innings with off-spinner Kieran Bull claiming 3/36 and the Glamorgan fielders taking some fine catches close to the wicket and in the deep.

This morning further wickets tumbled as Glamorgan, needing 302 to win, attempted to recover from the loss in the final over last night  of new signing Stephen Cook who was bowled by Tony Palladino. Tom Cullen therefore joined Connor Brown when play resumed this morning with Palladino in tandem with Lockie Ferguson. Cullen greeted Palladino by cover-driving him for four but two balls later, the seamer re-arranged his stumps as Glamorgan slipped to 22/2. It nearly became 22/3 as Kiran Carlson thick-edged his first delivery just wide of the gully fielder.

Ferguson then struck Brown a glancing blow on his helmet with the ball cannoning off for four leg-byes. The batsman showed no ill effect but then miscued a hook just over the head of the fielder positioned at leg-slip. But with the total on 32 Palladino struck again as the umpire upheld an appeal for l.b.w. after the ball had jagged back into the right-hander. One run later, and with the floodlights on, Palladino was in the action again as he took a catch at long-leg to remove David Lloyd as he hooked Ferguson.

Chris Cooke began with some fluent drives into the off-side before being struck on hand by a rising delivery from Ferguson. Martin Andersson duly replaced the Kiwi at the City End after an hour’s play and with his fifth legitimate delivery he had an appeal for a catch behind upheld by the umpire to end Brown’s stoic innings. 42/5 saw Graham Wagg join Cooke who twice swatted Palladino for four before biffing Andersson through extra cover for three.

But with the total on 56, Wagg departed as he edged a drive against Andersson and Wayne Madsen, after impersonating a circus juggler, completed the slip catch at the fourth attempt. Ruaidhri Smith became Cooke’s new partner as he greeted the introduction of Ravi Rampaul at the Racecourse End by clipping him to deep square-leg before cutting him through point to register successive boundaries.

Cooke then drove Andersson through mid-wicket before Smith was almost caught at third slip as he edged Rampaul. Another edge, this time against Andersson, saw Smith gain four runs as the ball evaded the slip cordon. But he was not so fortunate in Andersson’s next over as Gary Wilson held a shoulder high catch at second slip. 82/7 became 82/8 as two balls later Timm van der Gugten miscued a ball back to the bowler.

Cooke defiantly pulled Andersson for six but Palladino returned as Derbyshire claimed the extra fifteen minutes before lunch in the hope of swiftly ending the contest. However, Cooke pulled Palladino for four to complete a 59-ball fifty as Glamorgan’s total also went into three figures. Bull also remained defiant as the Welsh county went to lunch on 107/8.
