ODI's at CardiffGlamorgan Cricket have successfully staged six international games at Cardiff. The first one-day international at Cardiff took place on May 20th 1999 as New Zealand defeated Australia in a zonal contest in the World Cup competition. Their five-wicket victory was set up by an unbeaten 80*from Roger Twose, but Australia – who were based at the Cardiff ground for the tournament – subsequently recovered and went on to lift the Word Cup title.
Australia returned in June 2001 and defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets, with Ricky Ponting, Micahel Bevan and captain Steve Waugh all scoring attractive half-centuries in front of another capacity crowd at the Cardiff ground. South Africa and Zimbabwe were the next international visitors to Cardiff, as in July 2003 the Proteas won by 9 wickets as Herschelle Gibbs won the Man-of-the-Match Award with an unbeaten 93. In July 2004, New Zealand played the West Indies at Cardiff with the Kiwi’s winning again by five wickets, thanks to Hamish Marshall’s unbeaten 75.
June 18th 2005 saw one of the greatest upsets in world cricket history as minnows Bangladesh defeated Australia by 5 wickets, with Mohammad Ashraful scoring a superb century as Bangladesh recorded their most famous win in their international career. England then visited Cardiff for the first time on August 2006 to play Pakistan in a day-night encounter at the Cardiff ground – the first following the installation of permanent floodlights at Cardiff. However, the weather proved to be the only winner as Pakistan faced just seven overs in reply to England’s total of 202.
