The Room: The Sophia Hall at Sophia Gardens
Born in the mind of Super Furry Animals front man Gruff Rhys, the National Theatre of Wales production of the Incredible Inflatable Candylion was billed as a theater concert for the family. When we saw the plans for the set design, complete with a giant version of the children’s board game Mouse Trap, suspended clouds, blackout curtains, theatrical lighting rigs, an audience participation ball pit and, of course, a giant inflatable Candylion, we were rather taken aback. But, as our gallery shows, the results were incredible.
"Take a pinch of psychedelia, a touch of manga, a dash of political fable and the touchy-feely goodwill of a reception-class circle time and you have Candylion."
- The Guardian, December 2015
A sold-out run and critical acclaim served to strengthen the credentials of the National Theatre of Wales as a visionary creative force. Gruff Rhys emerged with his reputation further enhanced having written, produced and starred in the show and our versatile hall, unlovingly described in the Guardian as a ‘waterproof aircraft hangar’, was lovingly returned to it’s original state.
