Marchant De Lange

Marchant de Lange, the 26 year-old fast bowler from South African, joined Glamorgan on a three-year deal in 2017 and appeared on a regular basis in the Welsh county’s team in both white and red ball cricket. His fast, full length deliveries helped to secure several victories, especially the NatWest Blast T20 game against Somerset at Taunton, where he delivered a nerveless final spell as Glamorgan won a nail-biting contest by just one run.

Born in Limpopo in October 1990, Marchant last appeared for his country at Bloemfontein in February 2016 during their one-day series with England. He shone as a schoolboy athlete, especially with the javelin, and these experiences were successfully transferred into his bowling skills, with Marchant being able to extract pace and bounce from a short run-up.

In 2010/11 he made his first-class debut for Easterns, and after attending the national academy, he was played the following season for the South African A side against Australia. Following a series of impressive performances for Easterns, Marchant was drafted into the South Africa team in December 2011 when Vernon Philander was injured for the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka at Durban.

The 21 year-old duly claimed figures of 7/81 on his Test debut, but loss of form and a series of injuries meant that he has only played in one further Test. These injuries meant that Marchant remodelled his action and became a fine “death bowler” in one-day cricket. These skills in the closing overs of domestic Twenty20 matches in South Africa saw Marchant secure contracts in the Indian Premier League, and the Caribbean Premier League, in addition to appearances in four One-Day Internationals and six International T20s for South Africa.

Having played for Easterns and the Titans in domestic cricket in South Africa until 2015/16, Marchant switched to the Free State and the Knights for the 2016/17 season. He has subsequently enjoyed plenty of success for his new team, including career-best bowling figures of 7/23 against his former colleagues in their match at Centurion.

Random Fact: If Marchant wasn’t a cricketer, he’d be a MotoGP rider or Formula 1 driver.
