Evening Update

Graham Wagg joined Cooke when play resumed at 144/5 after tea and the combative all-rounder got off the mark by sweeping Patel for six. Cooke also did the same to the Kiwi spinner but next over he edged a ball from Patel to Trott at slip. Patel struck in his next over as 169/6 became 170/7 with Wagg chipping a catch to Will Rhodes at short mid-wicket.

Craig Meschede then opened his account with a square-driven four against Chris Wright before Andrew Salter mowed Patel to the ropes at mid-wicket. But with the total on 182 Meschede edged a rising ball from Wright into Ambrose’s gloves. Ruaidhri Smith drove his first ball through backward point for four before sweeping Patel for four. He also edged a cut for four before unfurling a cover drive against Patel but with the total on 202, Salter swept Patel to Rhodes at deep backward square-leg.

A late flurry of runs then occurred as Smith edged Ryan Sidebottom through the slips for four before Michael Hogan on-drove and off-drove Patel for a pair of fours. The flurry of runs continued as Smith late cut Sidebottom for four before clipping him to square-leg for six and four, before flaying him to third man for the fourth boundary in the over. He then reverse-swept Patel for four before lofting him to long-off for four en route to a 37-ball fifty with ten fours and a six.

Hogan defiantly lofted Sidebottom over long on for six before pulling the next ball for six over long-leg as the pair completed a fifty stand from 33 balls. Hogan celebrated by straight-driving Patel for six but two balls later he bowled Hogan as he ended with figures of 7/83 with Glamorgan 265 all out,

Afternoon update

Resuming with his side on 41/1 after lunch, Connor Brown square drove Chris Wright for four, before nurdling him to third man as Glamorgan reached the 50-mark in the 25th over. He then punched Wright off the back foot through point but next over he shouldered arms to Barker and was bowled. 60/2 saw the arrival of Kiran Carlson in the middle, with the youngster starting with a clip to the boards at square-leg against Wright followed by a steer to third man against Wright plus an on-driven four next ball.

Jeetan Patel then returned to the fray at the Penrhyn Avenue End whilst Ryan Sidebottom had a second spell at the Embankment End. Carlson cover drove Sidebottom whilst Selman survived a sharp chance at slip against Patel. But it did not prove to be a costly miss as two balls later he edged again propping forward to the spinner and edged into Ian Bell’s hands.

81/3 saw David Lloyd join Carlson and he began by thick-edging Patel for four followed by a more assured cover drive to the ropes. Carlson then square-cut Olly Stone when the paceman returned for a second spell, followed by a glance to square-leg for another firmly struck four. Lloyd also glanced him to fine-leg before puling him to deep backward square-leg, with Carlson also cover-driving him for a pair of fours.

But with the total on 137, Lloyd skewed a drive against Patel into the hands of Wright at backward point as Chris Cooke joined Carlson who flicked Stone to long-leg, but in the final over before tea, Carlson – on 49 – was snared l.b.w. by Patel.

Morning Update

Fifty years ago today the names of Sobers and Nash entered the cricketing record books as the great West Indian all-rounder became the first player to score six sixes in an over in a first-class match. Yesterday, Ian Bell wrote his name into the game’s annals as he struck his third successive hundred against the Welsh county this summer and in the process went past 20,000 runs in first-class cricket.

Today, there remains an opportunity for Glamorgan’s young batting line-up to make a name for themselves as the Welsh county look to erase Warwickshire’s substantial lead which by the close last night stood at 242 and was extended further this morning as the visitors batted on for a further 10.3 overs this morning before being all out.

Keith Barker began by on-driving Ruaidhri Smith for four before Olly Stone struck successive deliveries from Andrew Salter for four to square and extra-cover. Barker then completed his fifty from 70 balls before Stone deposited the spinner for six into Penrhyn Avenue, followed by a rasping cover drive for four against Smith. Barker plonked Salter again into Penrhyn Avenue for six before holing out to Hogan at long-on with the visitors on 488/9.

Stone then edged Smith for four to third man before Ryan Sidebottom saw Warwickshire past 500. But three runs later he was trapped lbw by Smith as the visitors’ innings ended with a lead of 300. Nick Selman and Jack Murphy duly began the second innings with 90 overs remaining in the day’s quota - plus 96 tomorrow. The latter struck the first boundaries as he clipped both Sidebottom and Barker to the ropes at square-leg, but in the fifth over he was adjudged l.b.w. to Barker.

With Glamorgan on 9/1 Connor Brown joined Selman who opened his account from his 32nd delivery before Brown straight drove Barker for four, followed by a sweetly timed cover drive to the ropes.
