Five things to look forward to in 2019

4 Jan 2019 | Cricket
After a challenging 2018, it promises to be an exciting season at Glamorgan with new arrivals on both the playing and coaching staff.

We will also see Sophia Gardens host some huge domestic and international matches throughout the season, including two England fixtures.

To stir up the excitement on the lead up to the new campaign, here is a breakdown of our top five things to look forward to this year.

1. The ICC Cricket World Cup

The ICC Cricket World Cup returns to England and Wales for the first time since 1999 and we’re lucky enough to host four fantastic fixtures.

England v Bangladesh and New Zealand v Sri Lanka are both sold out, but there are tickets remaining for Afghanistan v Sri Lanka on Tuesday, 4th June and South Africa v Afghanistan on Saturday, 15th June.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch cricket’s showpiece event!

2. Vitality IT20

As well as the ICC Cricket World Cup, Cardiff will host the only Vitality IT20 of the summer when England and Pakistan meet on Sunday, 5th May.

Pakistan are the number one ranked IT20 team in the world and in Babar Azam contain the number one ranked batsman in their ranks.

England sit in third but boast a powerful batting line-up, which includes Jos Buttler who is currently tearing up the Big Bash in Australia.

3. Young Welsh Talent

Glamorgan are blessed with a number of talented young players in their squad who are all looking to kick on this season and nail down their place in the first team.

There are high hopes for twenty-three-year-old Jack Murphy who enjoyed a breakthrough 2018 at the top of the order, scoring over 500 runs in the Specsavers County Championship.

Kiran Carlson dazzled with a match winning innings against Surrey at the Oval in the Vitality Blast and struck a memorable century against Derbyshire at St. Helen’s while batting with Usman Khawaja.

The Welsh county will also be looking to the likes of Ruaidhri Smith, Lukas Carey, Kieran Bull, Connor Brown and Jeremy Lawlor to continue their development.

4. The Return of the Vitality Blast

The Vitality Blast has been our most fruitful competition over the last few years.

In 2016 we reached the quarter-final stage. In 2017 we topped the south group and reached Finals Day for the first time since 2004 and although last year wasn’t as successful, we still won a club record five T20 matches in a row.

With the six-hitting power of Colin Ingram, the young Welsh talent coming through and the experience of older players such as Timm van der Gugten and Graham Wagg, Glamorgan will have high hopes in the Vitality Blast.

This year we start our campaign against local rivals Somerset on a Thursday night and also have three massive Friday night fixtures.

5. New signings

It’s an exciting time at Glamorgan with new signings on and off the pitch.

Mark Wallace will take over from Hugh Morris as director of cricket in February, while the vastly experienced Matt Maynard has been installed as our interim head coach and has led our winter training programme.

We have also added the highly talented batsman Billy Root to our playing squad. Billy arrives from Nottinghamshire having averaged over thirty across all three formats.

WE HOPE YOU HAVE A FANTASTIC 2019 AND ENJOY ALL GLAMORGAN HAS TO OFFER!
