Cooke returns for Glamorgan

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 14-man squad for Glamorgan’s Specsavers County Championship clash against Middlesex at Sophia Gardens tomorrow.

Club captain Chris Cooke makes his return to the squad after recovering from the ankle injury he sustained in the County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Newport in May.

Marchant de Lange is back to bolster the seam bowling options after being rested for the clash against Worcestershire last week, while Charlie Hemphrey is included after missing the same match for the birth of his first child.

After missing the last seven County Championship matches through injury, Cooke is looking forward to getting back on the park and help the club carry on their unbeaten run.

“It’s exciting to be back in the fold,” said Cooke. “The boys have done really well and especially David Lloyd who took over as captain and Tom Cullen behind the stumps, and that’s testament to where we are with our squad and hopefully, I can make a positive contribution and add to what has been a fantastic few games for the boys.

Glamorgan currently sit in second place in Division Two just seven points behind leaders Lancashire and Cooke is delighted at the change in mentality and the positive attitude showed by the squad.

“The dressing room is a good place to be at the moment. At the start of the season we said we wanted to play better cricket and how a lot more fight and I that got us into a promotion push then so be it.

“So far we’ve done that so it’s about carrying on with the process and trying to play better cricket and seeing where that gets us.”

The Welsh county face a Middlesex side who are seventh in the division but are on the back of an impressive display against Gloucestershire and possess a strong bowling unit, full of international pedigree players.

“They have a strong bowling attack and it’s hard to look past that,” added Cooke. “You’ve got Roland-Jones, Finn, Murtagh, Helm so it’s almost like an international attack.

“We’ll have to play well if we’re going to get a positive result from the match but I’m confident we can put in another good performance.”

Glamorgan 14-man squad: Cooke+*, Selman, Hemphrey, Labuschagne, Root, Lloyd, Douthwaite, Wagg, Cullen, Morgan, de Lange, van der Gugten, Hogan and Carey.
