Glamorgan v Worcestershire T20: Head-to-Head

25 Aug 2020 | Cricket

Glamorgan open their programme in the Vitality Blast by welcoming the Worcestershire Rapids to Sophia Gardens on Thursday, 27 August for a T20 contest due to start under the Cardiff floodlights at 6.30pm (writes Andrew Hignell).

Glamorgan have not met the Rapids in the T20 competition since 23 July 2013 with the Welsh county winning the contest at their headquarters by five wickets after successfully chasing a target of 158 with five balls to spare. Jim Allenby had laid the foundations of the successful chase with a typically assertive half-century from 42 balls, before Man-of-the Match Murray Goodwin posted a spritely fifty from 30 balls after the equation had become 100 from the last ten overs.

Earlier, Graham Wagg had delivered a frugal spell which included three cheap wickets, including that of Andre Russell who tried an expansive drive against the left-arm bowler before being taken ill in the dugouts and unable to bowl when Worcestershire took to the field and looked to defend their total which had been built around a second wicket partnership between the cosmopolitan pairing of Thilan Samaraweera and Alexei Kervezee, with the Sri Lankan and Dutchman adding 91 in 10.1 overs after the early incisions by Wagg.

The game between the two sides at Cardiff in 2012 had been washed out without a ball being bowled, like the match scheduled in 2008 at Sophia Gardens. Of the other matches at Cardiff between Glamorgan and Worcestershire, the Welsh county were successful by 56 runs in the inaugural contest during June 2003 thanks to a typically vibrant 72 from Matthew Maynard.

Glamorgan also won the game at Sophia Gardens during 2005 thanks to a second wicket stand of 101 between Mike Powell and Brendon McCullum. Andrew Davies also claimed three wickets as the Welsh county recorded a seven-wicket victory. However, it was Worcestershire who were victorious at Cardiff in 2009 after an opening stand of 72 between Vikram Solanki and Steven Davies, plus a return of 3/19 by Gareth Andrew.
