After a great start to their Specsavers County Championship campaign - where Glamorgan sit in second place and currently occupying one of the promotion spots - Head coach Matt Maynard and his team now turn their attention to the shortest format of the game, the Vitality Blast.

Glamorgan begin the competition against Somerset on Thursday, 18th July in ‘The Big Match’ and Maynard is relishing the return of the Blast an the opportunity to face his old side.

“We play Somerset on Thursday, it’s a derby clash, it’s the Big Match and it will be really exciting.” said Maynard

“We’re expecting a big crowd, and hopefully we will get a few more walk ups on Thursday night and it will be fantastic. It’s a really important competition, every County wants to win it. There are only half the counties that can win the Championship, those in the Second Division can’t win the Championship.

“Any of the 18 teams can win the T20, all the Head Coaches and captains will tell you yeah we want to get to that finals day because its such a great occasion at Edgbaston. There’s a process to go before then.

“I think moving on hopefully we can take some confidence from the way we have played in the County Championship, you know, guys are confident about their own abilities. It’s a totally different game however, but a lot of our guys in the first team are playing a lot of cricket this year so its going to be really exciting.”

Vitality Blast captain and legend Colin Ingram, is back for Glamorgan after a successful winter plying his trade in the IPL, Big Bash and PSL, while players who have been on the periphery of the first team so far this season may be given the chance to impress in the competition.

“One or two guys like our Captain will be coming in from outside and he brings us a huge amount of energy,” added Maynard.

“We have one of the best white ball players in the world in Colin Ingram so its really exciting times. For the likes of Kiran Carlson, Owen Morgan, Craig Meschede and Jeremy Lawlor who haven’t featured a lot for the first team this year, it’s a huge opportunity for guys.

“It brings a bit of energy, if you’re just coming back into the first team you really want to impress and you have all that energy to give to the team, and that rubs off on others. That’s what we are hoping for and that’s what we will be asking for”
