STAT ATTACK - Glamorgan's second highest T20 run chase

20 Sep 2020 | Cricket

The date 20 September already has a special place in Glamorgan’s history as it was on this day in 1997 Glamorgan that the Welsh county defeated Somerset at Taunton to clinch the County Championship title. This afternoon at New Road the Welsh county’s batsmen brought the curtain down on their 2020 season by evoking memories of that game at Taunton and some stunning batting by the men in the daffodil sweaters as they posted their second highest successful run chase in T20 cricket. (writes Andrew Hignell)

Set a target of 191 to win, half centuries by David Lloyd and Nick Selman laid the foundations as the opening pair shared a stand of 120 – Glamorgan’s best against the Rapids - before Dan Douthwaite bludgeoned three sixes in the closing over as the Welsh county won by six wickets with two deliveries remaining. The list below shows Glamorgan’s highest run chases in T20 cricket

224-5 v Essex Eagles at Chelmsford in 2017 (won by 5 wickets)
196-4 v Worcestershire Rapids at Worcester in 2020 (won by 6 wickets)
195-6 v Surrey at The Oval, 2018 (won by 4 wickets)
194-2 v Somerset at Taunton, 2004 (won by 8 wickets)
192-3 v Essex Eagles at Chelmsford, 2010 (won by 7 wickets)

Nick Selman's career-best 78 this afternoon at New Road was also Glamorgan's highest-ever individual score in T20 matches against Worcestershire, surpassing the 72 made at Sophia Gardens in 2003 by Matthew Maynard - the man who on 20 September 1997 had led Glamorgan to the Championship title !
