We have a duty to our Members - Morris

The loyalty of the Glamorgan membership was the driving force behind the county’s vote for four-day cricket, said Hugh Morris.

After the Club voted for a season structure to contain both a red-ball and white-ball competition, Glamorgan’s Chief Executive put the decision down to the desire to reward the Club’s Membership for their support during the lockdown.

“We voted to play four-day cricket, we think that it’s the format of the game that our Members wanted to see, and our Members have been incredibly loyal to us over a very difficult period.

“Nearly 90% of our Members [to date, as of 7th July] have donated their subscription for this season, which is a phenomenal effort and they need to be rewarded. I’m sure they’d enjoy watching some Championship cricket, albeit on a live stream.”

Morris also explained that the Club has a duty to promote cricket across Wales, especially given the enthusiasm of the recreational game throughout the lockdown, and that all the players were staff were keen to get back and help where they can.

“It’s great news that we are going to be playing cricket again.

“There’s been a lot of work done by many people in the game - at the beginning of the summer none of us thought we’d be at this point so to have it confirmed that we’ll be starting on 1st August with red-ball cricket, followed by T20 cricket, is fantastic and I’m sure everyone is really looking forward to it.

“It’s going to cost a lot of money but we are a professional cricket club, we’ve been given permission and guidance that we can play cricket from August 1st

“We have a duty to our Members, and cricket lovers throughout Wales. To play at the professional level, in the right conditions, is going to be really important to us.”
