Match Drawn at Cardiff as rain washes out day four

11 May 2016 | Matches
Rain washed out the fourth and final day of Glamorgan’s Specsavers County Championship match against Worcestershire at The SSE SWALEC with the weather-ravaged contest ending in a draw.

Afternoon update

After an inspection at 12.45pm it was decided that play would resume at 1.55pm with 60 overs remaining in the daily quota. However, the rains returned around 1.30pm to scupper thoughts of a resumption and an early tea will be taken at 3.10pm. With the rains still falling at 3.30pm, the umpires called off play as the game ended in a soggy draw.

Morning Update

No play was possible yesterday at The SSE SWALEC as for the first time since September 26th, 2013 Glamorgan lost an entire day’s play in a Championship match. On that occasion, it was also the third day of the contest – against Gloucestershire – which fell foul of the weather, but after a declaration on the final morning, Glamorgan then dismissed the West Country side before enjoying a run chase to round off the season with a victory.

Such a scenario will not happen with this contest as Glamorgan – on 42/4 - are still in their first innings, and 414 runs in arrears, with Worcestershire hoping that the rainfall relents and allows them to garner further bowling points. However, the rain was still falling at 10am when the umpires decided to delay the start, and with the precipitation still descending from gun-metal grey skies an hour later, the umpires decided to take an early lunch at 12.30pm.
