County Championship cricket returned to Newport after an absence of 54 years with Glamorgan playing Gloucestershire at Spytty Park in a four-day contest starting on May 14th 2019.
The West Country side were be very appropriate opponents as in 1939 at Rodney Parade - Glamorgan’s previous ground in Newport - Wally Hammond, the great England batsman scored 302 against the Welsh county before Emrys Davies, the legendary Glamorgan opener, replied with an unbeaten 287 to save the game for his side.
This match in 1939 was one of 27 first-class matches which Glamorgan staged at Rodney Parade between July 1935 and May 1965. It followed Glamorgan’s merger with Monmouthshire during 1934 with other grounds such as Ebbw Vale and Abergavenny also being subsequently added to the Welsh county’s fixture list.
Spytty Park ground has already hosted plenty of Glamorgan 2nd XI and Wales Minor County fixtures as well as the List A game during July 2016 against Pakistan A. The game with Gloucestershire in mid-May was the inaugural first-class fixture at the well-appointed ground.

From M4 motorway, take Junction 24.
At the roundabout take 4th exit (from Cardiff and West) or take 1st exit (from London and East) sign posted A48 Newport City Centre and Newport International Sports Village (NISV).
Continue along the distributor road (dual carriageway) for about 2 miles passing Tesco’s and Citroen garage on left hand side. (Follow brown tourist Sports Council signs for the NISV)
Turn left at Carcraft and take next left into Newport International Sports Village.
Newport International Sport Village (NISV) has a number of transport buses (services 42 and 43) that travel past the northern perimeter of the site via the A48.
Go to Stand 12 at Friars Walk Bus Station, Bus 42 or 43, ask the driver to let you know when coming to SDR stop for NISV. Short walk across the public walkway bridge to get to Newport International Sports Village.
Take the Great Western Service to Newport Gwent, which is on the main South Wales to London Paddington Line.
