2nd XI Fixtures Released

Glamorgan’s 2^nd XI fixtures have been announced, with the side set to play two games at Sophia Gardens.

The Second Eleven Championship has moved to a four-day format to mirror the senior competition, with the Second Eleven Trophy making way for the expanded format.

The Second Eleven T20 begins in mid-May, matching the block of games played at the first-class level and allowing players the chance to stake a claim for a place in the side before the Vitality Blast gets underway.

Glamorgan are reigning champions of the SET20, having beaten Hampshire in a dramatic final at Arundel, and will begin the defence of their title at home to the MCC Young Cricketers at Sudbrook on Monday, 18^th May.

The first game of the SEC sees the side host Somerset at Newport Cricket Club on Monday, 20^th April, while a series of one-day friendlies have been announced ahead of the Royal London Cup including a fixture against Scotland A at Sudbrook on Tuesday, 4^th August.

Sophia Gardens returns to the calendar in 2020 as the ground hosts an SET20 clash against Surrey on Monday, 1^st June as well as an SEC match-up against Warwickshire from 6^th-9^th July.

Second XI coach Steve Watkin has been in charge for a number of years, overseeing last year’s triumph and the promotion to the first team of a number of young players, and is pleased to be playing at Sophia Gardens again

“The fixture announcement is always exciting," said Watkin. "The season normally mirrors the 1st XI schedule, with blocks for games, and with the Second Eleven Championship expanding to four-day games it’s a really exciting year to see the development of players.

“To go into a season as reigning champions of the T20 means there is a target on our backs, but that’s great motivation to the boys to prove it’s not a one-off.

“It’s great to be back at Sophia Gardens for a couple of games too. That adds a little bit extra to the game and gives the guys a chance to play at an international venue.”
