Michael Hogan and fit again Timm van der Gugten established a position of strength with the ball for promotion-chasing Glamorgan on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship match with Worcestershire at Blackfinch New Road.

van der Gugten marked his return from a back injury with three wickets including the prized scalp of England all-rounder Moeen Ali, while Hogan with 4-36 took his wicket tally for the campaign to 36 as Worcestershire were bowled out for 205 in 70 overs after an uncontested toss.

“It was quite a slow day’s play and both teams bowled pretty well and it was quite hard to score," said van der Gugten.

“I think we would have taken that at the start of the day. A good first day for us and hopefully we can bat big tomorrow.

“There was a little bit happening all day, quite a slow wicket, one of those where you had to stick in there and play the patience game.

“I thought Kraigg Braithwaite did brilliantly in the final session. He has set a platform and hopefully he will bat well again tomorrow morning and then take the game on from there.

“It was good to get through that tricky period with just two wickets down and hopefully those two (Brathwaite and David Lloyd) can go on tomorrow.

“It hasn’t been the greatest season for me personally and it was nice to contribute. All the bowlers did well and we are going to have to do mor ein the second innings.”
